Beschreibung

Naturalis (in collaboration with Utrecht University) is looking for an Early Stage Researcher (3.5 years) in H2020/MCS/ITN “FluidNET”

The overall scientific aim of FluidNET is to contribute to developing and testing new nano- to crustal-scale models of fluid flux by constraining the time and length scales, mechanisms and provenance of fluids at different crustal levels. We are looking for a highly motivated Early Stage Researcher working on the following project:

Quantifying lithospheric fluid flux through melt transfer from mantle and lower crust to middle and upper crust (ESR10)

Aufgaben und Einsatzfelder

Objectives of the indivdual project:

To build a model for the amounts and rates of fluxes of different fluid species in igneous systems from the mantle and lower crust to the middle and upper crust. To test this model using carefully selected field examples, experimental data, geochemical analyses and isotopic tracers. To quantify these fluxes and link them to geochronological data to constrain process rates. To compare these rates with rates of direct fluid flux in shear zones connecting the same reservoirs to estimate their relative efficiency.

Expected results:

The ESR will produce an extensive survey of the relevant literature on fluid content and fluid distribution/partitioning coefficients in mantle-derived and crust-derived melts, and of fluid composition in a variety of sedimentary (including metamorphosed) crustal rocks that may serve as melt sources elsewhere. The ESR will link these with other geochemical and experimental data and models of crustal evolution. Together with data on the efficiency of melt escape and melt transfer from the lower crust, this will lead to a model of fluid flux as a function of transient thermal gradients and crustal level. Subtracting the fluids remaining within fluid-bearing minerals in the igneous rocks upon cooling, provides an estimate of the net flux of fluid species into the host rocks during transport and final emplacement, a critical parameter for the redistribution of volatile elements between the reservoirs. It may also lead to constraints on the metal and trace element flux into the middle and upper crust, which could potentially guide novel ore exploration methods. The project thus provides critical input for fluid modelling, and constrains the large-scale transfer of ore-bearing fluids and the (re)mobilisation of elements crucial for society. Secondments are planned to broaden the scientific scope (universities of Milano and Torino) and to become familiar with societal applications in geothermal energy (STEAM, Pisa) and mineral resources (BHP, Perth).

Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten

EU eligibility rules, applied to this specific position, require that the recruited researcher:

  1. has not resided in The Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date, and has not carried out the main activity (work, studies, etc.) in The Netherlands, unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention;
  2. is, at the date of recruitment, an “early stage researcher”, i.e. in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of a research career, counted from the date when the researcher obtained an MSc degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate in The Netherlands;
  3. does not have a doctoral degree, but does have, at the time of enrollment, an MSc diploma recognized in The Netherlands.

These eligibility criteria are non-negotiable and ineligible applicants will not be considered. Eligible applicants can be of any nationality.

Candidate profile:

We are looking for a highly motivated person with good communication skills and a keen interest in large-scale geochemical modelling. A good level of written and oral English is required. Prior experience with GIS and statistics are desired, but not required. Knowledge of languages other than English is an asset in order to extract information from local and national databases and literature.

Beschäftigungsverhältnis

A contract (36 hours per week) for a period of one year, to be extended with 2.5 more years after a successful first year evaluation, and a monthly starting salary of € 2,840.- (circa € 37,500 gross per year). The successful candidate will be employed by Naturalis in Leiden. Naturalis Biodiversity Center offers an inspiring working atmosphere with effective and efficient supervision of our PhD candidates. Our Research Coordination Office also provides ample support to our scientific staff. 

This project is now funded for 3.5 years. As the ESR will be enlisted in the Utrecht University PhD programme, which normally lasts 4 years, we are looking into possibilities to fund the final 6 months.
