Doctoral Position B8-1-D1

Transregional Collaborative Research Center
Berlin & Münster

Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets (TRR 170) is a Transregional Collaborative Research Center located in Berlin and Münster (Germany). The center is funded by the German Research Foundation and comprises research groups at Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), Technische Universität Berlin (TUB), Westfälische Wilhelms Universität Münster (WWU), Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN) and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt Berlin (DLR). The scope of TRR 170 is the interdisciplinary study of the late growth history of the terrestrial planets from the last giant collisions between planetary embryos to the terminal phase of late bombardment, approximately 3.8 billion years ago. The center also aims to provide a broad, interdisciplinary planetary science education to doctoral students.

Aufgaben und Einsatzfelder

In subproject B8 we study the chemical and stable isotope variations in components of meteorites in order to understand the origin of volatile elements in the terrestrial planets. The candidate is expected to have strong skills in isotope geochemistry and initial analytical experience in mass spectrometry (ICPMS, TIMS or gas source MS) and relevant sample preparation methods. Clean room experience would be beneficial. The position requires a M.Sc. (or comparable) degree in geology, mineralogy or, in exceptional cases, in chemistry. Participation of doctoral students in TRR 170-related research and teaching activities is expected. Very good English language skills are required. The position is currently funded until December 31st 2023. The position may be extended into a third funding period of TRR 170 to complete the project.
