Beschreibung

The Department of Sedimentology & Environmental Geology, Geoscience Center of the University of Göttingen is seeking a highly motivated applicant for a

PhD position in geochemistry (all genders welcome)

on a fixed-term contract for three years beginning in April/May 2022. Payment will be in accordance with the German collective agreement for public employees (TV-L E13, 75% of a full position, 29.85 h/week).

Climate and seawater chemistry are connected, but the exact linking mechanisms remain unclear. The processes that affect seawater chemistry will also shift stable Mg isotope ratios in seawater and therefore Mg isotopes can help resolve the relation between seawater chemistry and the carbon cycle. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to improve existing approaches to assess the stable Mg isotope evolution of Cenozoic seawater from carbonate archives.

Aufgaben und Einsatzfelder

As our PhD candidate you will predominantly work in the clean-room laboratory for sample preparation and ion chromatography as well as using state-of-the-art mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS, TIMS, ICP-OES) and you will use various optical methods for sample characterization. As part of this project you will be actively involved in method development.

Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten

The successful applicant will have a university Master's degree in Geosciences or related field, preferentially with a geochemical thesis. We particularly encourage students to apply who are enthusiastic about lab work and mass spectrometry. A good sense of responsibility, good communication skills and good oral and written language skills in English are required. The ability to work in the field for short sampling campaigns and experience with carbonate diagenesis are beneficial.

Beschäftigungsverhältnis

We offer an international and creative environment with flat hierarchies, research challenges and access to well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories across geoscientific disciplines including sedimentology, petrology and isotope geochemistry.
